The new anime season marches on, and I’ve been checking out the new shows to see which ones were worthy of sharing with you here. Today let’s look at the hilarious Kyuuketsuki Sugu Shinu, aka The Vampire Dies in No Time, the goofy but fun story of a bromance between a vampire hunter and a weak vampire who dies at the drop of a hat (but is resurrected right away).
Why You’ll Love Kyuuketski Sugu Shinu
When I start a random new anime, I’ve generally not done any research on it ahead of time, because I want to enjoy it with an open mind. All too often a given show fails to make a strong positive impression, and I start making notes for an “anime series you’re not watching” blog post later in the season, to round up the shows that are failing to generate significant buzz. I’m happy to say that’s not the case with The Vampire Dies in No Time, which had me laughing like an idiot from the beginning.
Kyuketsi Sugu Shinu is about a vampire hunter named Ronaldo who makes his living killing vampires and writing stories about his adventures. When he hears that a vampire in a nearby castle is suspected of kidnapping a child, he goes to defeat the monster. He meats Draluc, rumored to be a powerful lord of the undead… but he’s really a weak vampire who dies easily, even if he’s hit by an opening door. Happily, Draluc is able to resurrect himself a few seconds later, meaning that his many “deaths” become a fun punchline for endless visual gags.
When Draluc’s castle is destroyed, he has no choice but to move in with Ronaldo, the man whose job it is to kill creates like him. The result becomes a kind of buddy cop comedy in which both men must team up to solve the problems that come up.
The animation for Kyuuketsuki Sugu Shinu, by Madhouse, is acceptable and doesn’t flag Peter’s CGI hate-o-meter as it’s 100% hand-drawn animation. The jokes are enjoyable, in a turn-your-brain-off sort of way, and I’ll definitely keep watching this fun series!
