The new anime season marches on, and I’m still scouting for the best shows to write about here. While some will be a hit with fans, some other new offerings might not find success. There’s a new Strike Witches series, but it’s a short and overly kawaii-ified series based on a 4-koma manga that I somehow can’t get excited about. Then there’s Kono Oto Tomare!, a series about high school boys who are extremely serious about playing koto, a traditional Japanese musical instrument, which I can’t see getting too much traction internationally…but then I might have thought that about Chihayafuru once. One show I know I’ll be watching is Joshi Kausei, an innovative “silent anime” that has more cute anime thighs than a KFC Party Bucket.
The anime is based on a manga by Wakai Ken and published by Futabasha, and it’s a completely silent story, with no dialogue at all. Instead, the focus is on cuteness, especially the way the three oba-kawaii (stupid + cute) girls interact with each other, which usually involves their adorable anime thighs. As each short (3-minute) episode unfolds, the three girls — cute but unlucky Futo Momoko, the cool glasses-wearing Shibukawa Shibumi and the adorable Furui Mayumi — do various cute things, which usually reveals the thighs of the three girls through innovative camera angles and plot elements.
Puns are a big part of the show, and each girl’s name gives an indication of what she’ll bring to the story. Momoka’s name literally means “thick thighs,” Shibumi’s name indicates her reserved personality (shibui means “cool and elegant”), while Mayumi’s name is a joke because her kanji can be read to mean “thick eyebrows.” The show’s name is a stylized form of joshi kousei (meaning high school girl) written in an old fashioned way, for the same reason Evangelion is sometimes written with now-archaic katakana ヱヴァンゲリヲン, just because it looks cool.
If you’d like a fun anime to watch that allows you to completely turn off your brain and enjoy cute anime thighs, give Joshi Kausei a try!
