Another Anime Expo is finally behind us! As I recover from the show, I’m trying to map out what anime I will be watching over the coming weeks. We’ve got quite a lot of fun series in store, so let’s list the 15 shows J-List will be paying attention to!

What New Anime Will J-List Be Watching in the Summer 2024 Season?
What makes a good anime season? Hopefully, we get a good mix of beloved series returning with new seasons and fresh new stories that surprise and delight us. We never know ahead of time which series will send fans’ hearts soaring, but that’s part of the fun of being an anime fan!
Here are 15 new anime series from the summer 2024 anime season that J-List will focus on!
Oshi no Ko Season 2
I’m a huge fan of the unconventional Oshi no Ko, an idol anime with reincarnation, revenge and, er, “other” themes. It’s a story that could only come from the minds of Aka Akasaka, who brought us Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, and artist Mengo Yokoyari, creator of my beloved Scum’s Wish. I’m totally ready for the story to continue!
The Hit of the Season? My Deer Friend Nokotan
Reddit fans fawned over this slapstick gag anime when the first PV dropped. If you like silly deer-related jokes, you need to watch My Deer Friend Nokotan!
Plus-Sized Elf Gives Thicc Elf Goodness
We truly live in a golden age for manga artists, in which any popular work will be made into memes that spread across the Internet until an anime gets made. I’m looking forward to watching our thicc elf who can’t resist french fries…but I wonder if “certain groups” on the Internet can keep from trying to ruin our fun, given the content.
Narenare -Cheer for You!- Will Cheer Us Up!
A reader told me that the new cheerleading anime is set in J-List’s home prefecture of Gunma, about 100 km north of Tokyo. I would be tuning in anyway, because it’s by P.A. Works and I always watch the anime the studio makes. The chance to see familiar locations makes me even happier about the new show!
Gimai Seikatsu Offers Stepsister Incest???
With a title like “Days with My Stepsister,” you can bet your butt I’ll be watching. Maybe the show will be the fan service hit of the season.
More New Anime! Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest
If you love sexy fan service, maybe you should watch Fairy Tail: Thousand-Year Blood War 100 Year Quest, a spin-off that takes place one year after the main series ends. I’m glad it’s on Crunchyroll and not Netflix, the platform where Edens Zero went to die.
Isekai Suicide Squad
Wait, a proper anime version of Suicide Squad? With the kinds of characters and action anime fans are used to? This seems to have a lot of potential, as long as it’s American companies backing up a truck of money and letting the Japanese companies tell the story they want to, like Star Wars Visions did so successfully. It will be on Hulu/Disney+.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
I’ve written before about how the Japanese have a weird reverence for Russians, perceiving them as white-haired magical people perhaps similar to Tolkien’s elves. This new anime is about a half-Russian transfer student who becomes the idol of the school, and a boy (who secretly speaks Russian) who has a crush on her. Let’s hope it’s good!
Love Is Indivisible by Twins
Wait, we get another anime with twincest drama, in addition to Oshi no Ko? Not quite. This anime is a love triangle between a boy and two twin sisters, each with very different personalities.
2.5-jigen no Ririsa
I’m always down for a romance anime about otakus, and this show might fit the bill. It’s the story of Masamune, a high school boy who obsesses over a 2D manga character named Liliel. Another member of the manga club is Ririsa Amano, who loves the same character. Can Masamune and Ririsa find love through their shared passion of manga?
Giji Harem / Pseudo Harem
A harem anime about a boy named Eiji who wants to be popular. His junior in the drama club, Rin, decides to help him out by creating a “harem” for him.
Megami no Café Terrace 2nd Season
The fan service anime about a man running his grandmother’s coffee shop with the help of five sexy women continues! J-List blog writer Joe will be so happy!
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
I do love anime that deconstructs the elements of anime and visual novels. This is the story of Anna Yanami, a self-described “background character” who befriends girls who have been rejected romantically. Visually, the show looks amazing!
Isekai Shikkaku
An isekai anime about a famous real author who died by suicide? The No Longer Allowed In Another World anime is based on a manga in which the famous author finds himself summoned to a magical world. But since he lived in 1948, he doesn’t know anything about video games, elves, or all the other elements of an isekai story. I’m enough of a Japanese literature nerd that I’ll totally check this out!
Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai
The story of Takuma, a tired salaryman who works too much. He’s too busy to properly keep his house in order, so he buys a housekeeping robot named Mina. One day he jokes that Mina should become his actual wife. But could a relationship between a human and a robot ever be possible?
