Is 2.5-Jigen No Ririsa The Perfect Otaku Anime?

Anime is great when it helps us escape the real world and live vicariously through characters who are doing what we wish we could do. One new anime I’m totally enjoying is 2.5-jigen no Ririsa (English title: 2.5 Dimensional Seduction), which has the greatest romantic setup an otaku could ask for!

The Story of 2.5-Jigen no Ririsa

Okumura is the sole member of his school’s manga club. He hates “3D” women, instead pledging his eternal love to a 2D manga character named Lilliel. One day, a new student named Ririsa comes to join the manga club. Okumura rolls his eyes, sure that she’s a casual fan who’s only interested in mundane things like shoujo manga. But Ririsa surprises Okumura with her deep knowledge of otaku culture and even proceeds to cosplay as his beloved character Lilliel, right in front of him!

Okumura’s life gets even more complicated when other cute girls join the manga club. His childhood friend Mikari Tachibana joins his class. She had a crush on him back in junior high school and became a model so she could become super cute and finally turn Okumura’s head…but of course, he only has eyes for 2D girls like Lilliel. Later, other cosplayers invade his life, making it even more complex and confusing. Poor Okumura-kun!

The anime is based on a manga published in Shounen Jump+. The creator is Yu Hashimoto, who got the idea for this “cosplay romantic comedy” when he started drawing the character Lilliel, adding all his favorite character elements to her design. Then he imagined what kind of story could revolve around his character, eventually coming up with the plot for the manga. Because the cosplay elements are so important to the narrative, he had to get help from several professional cosplayers to ensure the story was realistic.

2.5 Dimensional Seduction Is the Perfect Otaku Fantasy

I love it when anime and manga creators devise the perfect set-up for their stories, inventing a world where all of us otakus would love to be the main characters. But since the harem genre has been explored to death, it’s important to get extra creative to create stories anime fans would like to watch.

The word 2.5D, of course, describes the bridge between fictional 2D characters and our 3D girls. Products that make anime characters seem more real, like the ones Tamatoys creates, are known as 2.5D. And J-List has plenty of those in stock for you here!

Fans who love anime waifus…and sexy fan service. The show has lots of sexy moments that are enjoyable to watch. Could you imagine a girl falling on you in a sexy way like this? It’s also full of humor. If you had told me this anime was by Hiroyuki, creator of The Manga Artist And His Assistants and Kanojo mo Kanojo, I would have believed you.

Anyone who loves serious anime about cosplay. It’s nice to see the topic of cosplay getting a semi-serious anime made. I look forward to the new characters that will be introduced as the season moves forward.

Those who love stories that capture what it means to be an otaku. I love anime series that accurately capture what it means for fans to dedicate their lives to nerdy things like anime and cosplay. Lovers of high-quality manga-to-anime adaptions. I’m a fan of J.C. Staff and trust them to give us a good anime season, even if I wish more of the sexy camera angles from the manga got directed ported. Another issue is that there are so many volumes of the manga that only a tiny amount of material will likely make it into the first season.
