Today, May 26th, is World Redhead Day, a special day to celebrate people with red hair. Since vibrant hair colors have always been a big part of anime, I thought it would be fun to explore what red hair represents in anime characters and make a list of the best anime redheads!

What Does Red Hair Represent in Anime?
Anime hair colors aren’t random, but are associated with certain tropes that communicate information about the character to fans quickly. Red hair generally represents these character elements:
- A fiery personality with lots of passion.
- Highly skilled, often with leadership abilities.
- Headstrong and rebellious, sometimes emotionally unreasonable.
- Being more aggressive, they pair great alongside straight-laced Japanese characters with black hair.
Every once in a while certain corners of the Internet go into a tizzy fit because a Japanese actor wasn’t chosen to play a certain role in a live-action anime adaption. This always amuses me, since Japanese people don’t seem to perceive anime characters as Japanese, but as foreigners. Sigh.
Who Are the Best Anime Redheads?
Let’s look at 13 of the best anime redheads in today’s post. See if your favorite character is on the list!
Lilith Asami from Trinity Seven. Although her character is a bit too derivative of Hong Meiling from Touhou Project, I really liked the character of Lilith-sensei, and watched this anime pretty much just because of her.
Stella Vermillion from Chivalry of a Failed Knight. This was a great harem anime because it took time out of the story for Stella and Ikki to have sex. We need more anime like this!
Lina Inverse from Slayers. A great character from the 90s classic anime Slayers, she was voiced by legendary seiyu Megumi Hayashibara.
Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail. Another fun anime redhead, who has some entertaining fanservice scenes for us to watch.
A-Ko from Project A-Ko. One of the most important anime redheads, A-Ko has amazing powers thanks to her unique parents, Superman and Wonder Woman. She perfectly fits the trope of red-haired characters having fiery personalities.
Minori Kushieda from Toradora! The energetic best friend of Taiga Aisaka, Minorin is a fascinating character who can generate French Fries out of thin air. It’s great re-watching Toradora! once you realize that Minori is a lesbian who secretly wants Taiga for herself.
Kyoko Sakura from Madoka Magica. Another example of hair color used to signal the fiery spirit of a character, Kyoko is a magical girl with a tragic history and an affinity for eating Pocky.
Miia the Lamia from Monster Musume to Iru Nichijo. You never forget your first snake waifu, and Miia is the best. Her red hair represents the way she’s unable to respect social boundaries where her Darling is concerned.

Yoko Littner from Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann. Another example of red hair perfectly matching the personality of a character, Yoko’s bright red hair is only surpassed by the flames printed on her bikini top.
Rias Gremory from High School DxD. Probably the anime redhead who made the deepest impression on early fans was Rias. It’s not hard to see why.

Makise Kurisu from Steins;Gate. The assistant all of us wish we had in real life. But hands off her flan pudding!
Asuka Langley Soryu from Evangelion. Finally, our pick for the best anime redhead, the original tsundere from the classic 1995 Neon Genesis Evangelion. She’ll always be my favorite.
