What Does Red Hair Represent in Anime?
Anime hair colors aren’t random, but are associated with certain tropes that communicate information about the character to fans quickly. Red hair generally represents these character elements:
A fiery personality with lots of passion.
Highly skilled, often with leadership abilities.
Headstrong and rebellious, sometimes emotionally unreasonable.
Being more aggressive, they pair great alongside straight-laced Japanese characters with black hair.
Every once in a while certain corners of the Internet go into a tizzy fit because a Japanese actor wasn’t chosen to play a certain role in a live-action anime adaption. This always amuses me, since Japanese people don’t seem to perceive anime characters as Japanese, but as foreigners. Sigh.
