Greetings from Japan — home of the original onion wine (wine made from onions, yech).
The recent “hayari” (boom, fashion) among young women in Japan has been to tan their faces an ugly, dark shade, tint their hair into shocking colors, and wear phosphorous make up to make themselves stand out all the more. These girls are called Ganguro (“black face”) or Yamanba (“old hag”). Mercifully, this shocking trend seems to be coming to an end, as young Tokyoites look for new ways of attracting attention and feeling special. The new boom is called “One-gal” (pronounced OH-ne gal), and is short for “oneesan gal” — with girls modeling their fashions on the current role models Hamasaki Ayu and Fujiwara Norika.
