Driving Really Fast in San Diego

I’ve been enjoying my time in San Diego, zooming around the freeways as I drive to the J-List San Diego office or run errands in preparation for the upcoming summer anime conventions. Driving in San Diego is especially nice when coming from Japan, a country where most time spent in the car is “city driving” with lots of traffic lights and road congestion, or infrequent trips on freeways that aren’t free. (It costs around $18 in tolls to drive from J-List’s home prefecture of Gunma into Tokyo, about 100 km/60 miles to the south.) Mrs. J-List is with me, and we’ve been visiting various places in San Diego that she hadn’t seen before. Driving through one part of town, we saw a large Japanese-style traditional building, and my wife said, “Wow, there must be lot of Asian influence in San Diego, if they built a Buddhist temple here.” Knowing the interesting sushi restaurants that can be found in the U.S., with amusing (to the Japanese) names like Wa Sushi, Godzilla Sushi and Domo Sushi, I was pretty sure the “Buddhist temple” was something else entirely. And sure enough, it turned out to be a sushi restaurant called Hon Sushi, in case you happen to be in the San Diego area and are hungry for sushi now.

Driving in San Diego is more fun than in Japan.
