While they took some time to get used to, I find I often like the trend of short-ish (12-minutes or less) anime episodes. The shorter format allows for a more casual kind of story to be told and takes the pressure off anime studios to craft a long plot that holds up over full-length episodes. It’s kind of like kicking back in a comfortable chair with a short 4-koma manga rather than a longer, more serious novel. One fun anime that’s currently airing is Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai, aka Ao-chan Can’t Study!, which is a story of a girl who hates sex so much, she ends up thinking about it all the time and getting into the most ridiculous situations.
Ao Horie, the daughter of a famous writer of erotic novels who named her after an ecchi word. She hates her father and wants nothing more than to study hard and get into a top-class university, while staying far from him. When classmate Kijima shows a romantic interest in her, she becomes flustered, not wanting anything to do with a boy who will immediately ask for sex if she decides to date him. But it’s all part of her own delusion, and as she obsesses about how to tell Kimima she hates him, things go the opposite way, and she ends up getting closer to him in every episode. In general, if you like “low” joke anime like Seitokai Yakuindomo, you might like Ao-chan Can’t Study!
It’s interesting to observe the trend in shows about characters who “can’t study.” We’ve got another series with a similar name this season (Bokutachi wa Benkyo Dekinai, aka We Never Learn) about a boy trying to teach several genius girls how to study subjects they’re not good at, plus the smash hit of last season, Quintessential Quintuplets, about a harem of five sisters who were all terrible at studying. I wonder if we’re in the middle of a “can’t study anime bubble” like the 2012-2017 Heisei Imouto Bubble when every third anime had to have the word “little sister” in its title in order to get funded.
