I usually don’t get excited about a title until someone announces an anime adaptation, but in this case, I’m willing to make a big exception!
In an announcement which hit the Internet on Sunday, January 17th, it was revealed by Weekly Shonen Jump that the author of the very popular (among the top 50 anime of all time) series Assassination Classroom, Yusei Matsui, will launch a brand new manga series in the next issue of the magazine. Even better, it was revealed on Thursday, January 21st on the English Shonen Jump account that the series will run in North America at the same time on the Shonen Jump app!
🚨NEW SERIES ALERT! 🚨
A brand new series by Yusei Matsui, the mangaka of Assassination Classroom, starts this Sunday! It's an epic samurai tale full of thrills and surprises! Read it FREE from the official source! https://t.co/cZQ105ZZvd pic.twitter.com/p17G3TYDpQ— Shonen Jump (@shonenjump) January 21, 2021
Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the new series besides the title, which is The Young Lord is Good at Getting Away (Nige Jozu no Wakagimi) and that it will be a samurai story. Any details beyond that are a mystery at this point, and we’ll all just have to wait and see how this one turns out.
Yusei Matsui got his first big break in the manga industry with the series Neuro: Supernatural Detective, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2005 to 2009 and was collected in 23 volumes before getting an anime adaptation produced by Madhouse in 2007. His next big series is arguably his best known, which would be Assassination Classroom. This series, which is easily my all-time favorite and my “go-to” pick whenever someone asks me for a recommendation, ran from 2012 to 2016 and was collected into 21 volumes. It also received an anime adaptation, though it ran for four cours and was produced by studio Lerche. It also got adapted into two live-action movies.
To say that I am excited to read a new manga from one of my favorite manga authors goes without saying. It’s an extreme joy and pleasure. I just hope that this series can fill the mighty shoes that were left behind by Matsui’s previous series and can become just as much of a success as the others.
