It seems like yakuza are everywhere in pop culture these days; from video games to manga to anime, yakuza characters have been getting their turn in the spotlight these last few years, with many even proving to be favorable representations. Last year we were treated to Way of the Househusband, this year we’re shifting from household chores to babysitting!
Early in the morning on Friday, January 14th, the first full-length promotional video for the upcoming adaptation of the manga series The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting hit the internet (the previous trailer was 30 seconds). In this series, the main character is a high-ranking yakuza named Toru (played by Yoshimasa Hosoya) who is tasked with babysitting his boss’s only daughter, Yaeka (played by Misaki Watada).
Recapping what we already know, the animation for this adaptation will be jointly produced by feel. and GAINA. Itsuro Kawasaki is wielding the power of the director while working off series composition written by Keiichiro Ochi and character designs adapted for anime by Hiromi Ogata. Takuro Iga will compose the background music. The original manga series is up to six volumes in Japan as of September 2021. Kaiten Books holds the English license for the manga.
I could absolutely understand anyone not being sold by the 30-second trailer we got a month ago. With almost two minutes of footage being made available now, however, I am beyond excited to see this heartwarming comedy brought to life.
As mentioned in a previous article, my first exposure to this series was via the manga subscription service Azuki. After reading everything that was available, I fell in love with this simple comedy and can’t wait to see this series adapted into a complete presentation. Trust me on this one, if you found last year’s Way of the Househusband to be lacking in one way or another, this one will heal that broken heart.
