It can often be hard to take harem manga and anime seriously. The ultimate wish-fulfillment of a meek, mild-mannered young man being swarmed by a dozen gorgeous women who are obsessed with him and only him just defies natural thinking. Why would all of these women be jumping out of their pants for this one guy? In the Kotaro Shono science-fiction manga World’s End Harem, the answer is pretty obvious — he’s the only man left on Earth. The raunchy sci-fi harem series teased an “important announcement” in its 82nd chapter that would be arriving to mark the four-year anniversary of the series. That announcement, it turns out, is an anime adaptation set to air in 2021.
Shueisha announced the anime adaptation of Shono’s World’s End Harem manga in celebration of the four-year milestone of the series and the recent launch of the 11th volume. The manga launched back in May of 2016 on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ service, and is currently being released in English by Seven Seas’ Ghost Ship label, who launched the eighth English volume of the saucy manga on March 31st. They describe the story of the series as follows:
The Man-Killer Virus: a lethal disease that has eradicated 99.9% of the world’s male population. Mizuhara Reito has been in cryogenic sleep for the past five years, leaving behind Tachibana Erisa, the girl of his dreams. When Reito awakens from the deep freeze, he emerges into a sex-crazed new world where he himself is the planet’s most precious resource. Reito and four other male studs are given lives of luxury and one simple mission: repopulate the world by impregnating as many women as possible! All Reito wants, however, is to find his beloved Erisa who went missing three years ago. Can Reito resist temptation and find his one true love?
World’s End Harem has also gone on to inspire multiple spinoffs. LINK and SAVAN launched a fantasy-style version of the story in 2018 titled World’s End Harem: Fantasia. The manga runs not only in Shueisha’s Ultra Jump magazine but also in the Shonen Jump+ service and their Young Jump! app. The fourth volume of this spinoff shipped on January 4th in Japan, while Seven Seas’ Ghost Ship imprint released the second volume in English on February 25th. Okada Ando also plans to launch a spinoff of this spinoff, with his upcoming series titled Shūmatsu no Harem: Fanatasia Gakuen (World’s End Harem: Fantasia Academy). It will launch in Ultra Jump on May 19th.
