A lot of people in Shibuya station last week were met with quite an awkward situation as a lot of Japanese Twitter users report that they have seen a woman running through the busy subway station completely naked. The incident happened on Thursday just before 11:30am Japan Standard Time. The mentioned station is considered as one of the busiest in Tokyo.
A Twitter user named Katstomo (@ka2_259) posted about the incident saying “Some woman was sprinting through Shibuya Station totally naked. Super scary.” Before everything went for the worse, local police made it in time and took to her custody. News report confirms that woman was indeed completely naked and stood out like a sore or naked thumb.
From the perspectives of many users online, a majority would definitely say that the woman deserves to be arrested because her actions are considered as a public disturbance. However, the ending of this story didn’t really conclude as what’s expected as the police did not push forward for an arrest and let her go. This sparked a lot of negative comments, some saying that it’s a double standard. Others even doubt of the authenticity of the report as no photos of the woman running or during her arrest was posted on social media.
“Why didn’t they arrest her? They’d have arrested a man who did that, wouldn’t they?” said one Twitter user.
Police do not see her as an unlawful criminal as they said that they have to let go of the woman because she wasn’t under the influence of drugs. She didn’t even have a weapon with her. “The woman had no criminal intent, so please put your minds at ease,” the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Shibuya Precinct spokesperson said.
On March 21 in Japan, people traditionally visit the graves of their ancestors in time for the spring equinox. Although this isn’t really done by a lot of people nowadays, there are still a lot of families who continue with this yearly tradition. With this kind of traditional day which is considered sacred to some, it comes to no surprise that this incident was something that shouldn’t be ignored at all.
