As is often the case, the right book can inspire people to greatness and heroism, and heroes from manga can leave strong impressions on readers. As the China Times reported, and CBR translated, a man known as Mr. Xu fought off an assailant wielding a knife on the Taichung Metro in Taiwan. When asked why he, as a regular citizen, fought a person who had already stabbed others, Mr. Xu identified himself as an otaku and named the man who inspired him. Himmel!
Otakus aren’t as bad as everyone thinks. Don’t stereotype. If it were Himmel, he would do the same. If time could be rewound, I would make the same choice again.
Yes, the great hero Himmel from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End inspired Mr. Xu to fight off evil. Himmel led the Hero Party to fight evil in his world, and his legends have survived here in ours.
The official Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Twitter (X) page took notice and repeated the immortal words, “勇者ヒンメルならそうした” (Himmel the Brave would have done it).
Some Japanese otaku have taken this line as a rallying cry to voice the times they followed Himmel’s example.
The Heroic Himmel Does His Homework!
There was that time a father told his daughter that Himmel would finish his homework on time. His English-translated tale reminded us Himmel would definitely finish his homework on time. He’s not the slacker type.
I told my 9-year-old daughter, “Hurry up and finish your homework because Himmel the Brave would’ve done that.”
Heroic Cosplay for Himmel? Of Course!
Two cosplayers imagined a worldline where Frieren and Aura became friends. Would Himmel the Brave have tried for the harem route…?
That’s what Himmel the Brave would have done. #The world line where Aura is your friend.
Registering for Requisite Courses? Himmel the Brave Would!
A student registered for courses that taught subjects he wanted to learn, whether easy or not. This is just what Himmel would have done.
← I choose to register for courses based on what I want to learn, whether or not it’s an easy course. Because that’s what Himmel the Brave would have done.
→When you see your grades announced
Finishing Side Quests in FF7? WWHD? (What Would Himmel Do?)
A gamer followed the great hero’s path and refused to leave before finishing every quest in Final Fantasy VII.
After clearing all the world reports, you go to the next area. That’s what Himmel the Brave would have done. #FF7R
Keeping Passengers Safe? Brave Train Station Staff Would Have Done So!
A commuter noticed how even the train station employees were inspired by the brave hero.
Arrived in Nagoya. A mysterious word greets you on a giant screen. Himmel the Brave would have done so. Is that a quote from a fellow Taichung native? lol
Himmel the Brave Tank Commander? Only in Frieren: Beyond Isekai Journey’s End!
Would Himmel the Brave have brought our modern military ordinance to battle the Demon King?
If a knife-wielding tyrant appears on the train, I, too, will stand up to him and say, “That’s what Himmel the Brave would have done,” so please prepare your 15cm armor-piercing grenades, too.
The post author explained the wordplay in another post.
A friend of mine responded to this tweet with something like “Don’t do anything dangerous,” and I thought about it and realized that only military geeks would understand it, so I’ll explain, but this is a German military “Hummel” self-propelled gun, and in essence, the story is that the name is similar to Himmel (・∀・;)
I could imagine Himmel recruiting the GIRLS und PANZER team to the Hero Party. To find out why, check out the Megami Magazine July 2024 and Megami Magazine DELUXE Vol. 39. They’re both available for purchase now.
