One of my favorite manga to be released in English in 2019 is The Way of the Househusband (Gokushufudo). In this hilarious story created by Kousuke Oono, the main character is an ex-yakuza who used to be known as the “immortal dragon.” After leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, he decided to walk away from the lifestyle entirely and chose a new path… the path of the househusband for his working wife.
To celebrate 1.2 million copies printed, the series has released a four-minute live-action promotional video that highlights some of the best moments from the first volume, starring actor Kenjiro Tsuda. Check it out below!
The seinen manga series is serialized in Shinchosha’s Kurage Bunch digital manga magazine. It first appeared as a regular series in May 2018 and has since been compiled into four volumes, with the most recent being released at the beginning of December 2019. The volumes are also being released in English by Viz Media, with the second volume hitting shelves at the end of December 2019.
Even though the series has only been around for almost two years, it has still garnered attention and praise from fans. The Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook for 2019 ranked this book at number eight for manga series for men. In addition to that, at the most recent Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards this series came in as runner-up in the web manga category.
If you haven’t picked up this manga yet, you’re in for a real treat when you do finally read it. Hilarious and touching all at the same time, this is a series that is going to go places in the next decade as more material is released into the wilds of the Internet.
