The Way of the Househusband is getting a live-action movie! This is not a drill! Sound every alarm!
Following up on the successful live-action television series from October 2020 (and less successful Netflix anime adaptation released in 2021, which was way too short), The Way of the Househusband (Japanese title: Gokushufudō) is getting a movie in the summer of 2022! The movie will feature the cast of the television series reprising their roles, including Hiroshi Tamaki as the immortal Tatsu.
Originally a manga series created by Kousuke Oono, The Way of the Househusband follows an ex-yakuza boss known as the immortal Tatsu who has given up that lifestyle and devoted himself to his office lady wife, Miku, as a dedicated househusband. The manga is up to eight volumes in Japan as of September 2021 and seven volumes in English as of January 2022. In the previously mentioned live-action series, a daughter character named Himawari was invented.
While I’m not normally a fan of live-action adaptations of manga (whether they be from Japan or anywhere else for that matter), this series was the exception. Capturing the charm of the original manga, the live-action television series was a highlight of a dismal 2020 and 2021. Filled with memorable characters and genuine laugh-out-loud moments, the live-action Way of the Househusband pushed every single one of my buttons to be labeled a genuinely good time and I am more than a little excited to see the movie when it is finally released widely.
Way of the Househusband: The Cinema may not pull in as much money as some of the other summer tent pole blockbusters that will be released during the hotter months, but it still would’ve easily earned a place on my reasons to be excited about 2022 list had it been announced just a bit sooner! Be sure to stay tuned to the J-List Blog for more details on this movie as they become available!
