This is what you refer to as a mic drop announcement from Viz Media because unless something truly Earth-shattering happens, this is the announcement that people are going to be talking about all weekend. In a tweet posted early on Friday, July 9th, Viz Media revealed they will release the Deadpool manga in English in spring 2022.
Announcement: Deadpool moves to Tokyo and encounters just about every kind of shonen trope you can think of! Chaos and humor collide in Deadpool: Samurai, out Spring 2022! pic.twitter.com/jnLF6nkCf6

Officially titled Deadpool: Samurai, the series ran for fifteen chapters starting in December 2020. Written by Sanshirō Kasama and illustrated by Hikaru Uesugi, the series features the popular “merc with a mouth” character as he moves to Tokyo and deals with all kinds of shonen misadventures and even runs into a couple of familiar manga heroes along the way (no spoilers from me!). The series finished this year with two volumes being published (the last of which hit store shelves in Japan on July 2nd). According to my correspondence with Viz Media, the series will be released in English in multiple volumes rather than being collected into an omnibus.
When I first heard about this manga being released in Japan, I cackled with glee because there is no better character in the world to turn shonen tropes on their heads than Deadpool. Fight me.
With it already being canon that Deadpool knows that he’s a comic book character, it feels like such a natural fit for this character to be the one to bridge the cultural divide between western comics and manga. I personally am already on the edge of my seat waiting to get my hands on a copy of this and binge-read it from start to finish!
If you’re a fan of Deadpool, this manga series will be a “can’t miss” release when it hits store shelves in 2022 and will look amazing in anyone’s home! Stay tuned to the J-List Blog for more information regarding this release as it becomes available.
