Finally! Some good news!
We can now confirm that the twice-delayed Violet Evergarden movie has a brand new theatrical premiere date! According to a commercial that aired on Japanese television this week, fans will be able to see the highly anticipated movie starting September 18th, 2020. No word on when it will premiere on any platform other than theaters in Japan, but we’ll keep you all updated on that news as it is reported.
As mentioned, the Violet Evergarden movie has been delayed twice now. It was originally supposed to hit theaters in January 2020 but was delayed because of the studio having to recover from last summer’s arson attack. The new premiere date had the movie premiering in April 2020 but it was delayed once again, this time due to concerns with COVID-19.
Violet Evergarden started as a light novel series penned by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase, which was entered into the annual Kyoto Animation awards where it took home the grand prize in 2014. It was the first entry to ever be awarded the grand prize in any category. The thirteen-episode anime adaptation premiered in January 2018, with animation produced by Kyoto Animation. Taichi Ishidate served as director and scripts were written by Reiko Yoshida.
The series was streamed worldwide by Netflix who describes the story as:
The war is over, and Violet Evergarden needs a job. Scarred and emotionless, she takes a job as a letter writer to understand herself and her past.
Now let’s hope that this new premiere date is able to be seen through to completion. I know that many of us, myself included, have been champing at the bit to see this movie ever since the beautiful television anime premiered around the world on Netflix. You can do it, Kyoto Animation!
