Actors in kids’ shows always give it their all to be as bright and chipper as possible. Whether it’s an animated series, a live-action program, or an in-person stage event, the performers involved make sure to be as happy and positive as possible when the cameras are rolling and the audience is watching. Are those actors just as peppy and pure once the show is over, though? Gaku Kuze’s comedy manga Uramichi Oniisan proposes that, when it comes to “Maman to Together” host Uramichi Omota, he absolutely is not. The manga about a children’s television star with emotional instability has been a hit, and now the series is making the leap to anime with an animated adaptation coming in 2020.
While there aren’t any official images or trailers for the upcoming Uramichi Oniisan anime, the voice actors from the promotional manga video above are set to reprise their roles for the television anime. That includes Hiroshi Kamiya as protagonist Uramichi Omota, Tomokazu Sugita as Uramichi’s sidekick in a giant bunny costume, Yuichi Nakamura as Uramichi’s other sidekick in a giant bear costume, Mamoru Miyano as professional singer Iketeru Daga, and Nana Mizuki as professional singer Utano Tadano.
The promotional video above also adds three new voice actors into the mix for the upcoming Uramichi Oniisan anime. Ryohei Kimura will be playing MHK sales planning department member Hanbee Kikaku, while Kenichi Suzumura is playing Saito Uebu, a member of the digital planning department. Finally, Kensho Ono is playing Matahiko Nekota, manager of the bar Cat Kick.
The Uramichi Oniisan anime series is being produced at anime studio Studio Blanc, who previously put out shows like Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho-bitch na Ken, Ro-Kyu-Bu!, and Goulart Knights: Evoked the Beginning. The upcoming anime will be directed by Nobuyoshi Nagayama, who previously worked on Smile Down the Runway, Are You Lost?, and Happy Sugar Life. Touka Machida, a writer for series like Lucky Star, Smile Down the Runway, and Wake Up, Girls!, will be overseeing the series scripts. Character designs are being handled by Mizuki Takahashi, an artist who previously worked on The Ones Within. Kisuke Koizumi of Dororo and Juni Taisen: Zodiac War fame will be the sound director alongside music composer Kei Haneoka, who has also composed for Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life and Negima!
The original Uramichi Oniisan manga first launched back in 2017, running in the digital manga magazine Comic POOL. Ichijinsha, one of the parent companies of Comic POOL, publishes the manga in compiled volumes. The fourth volume was published in October, with the fifth volume launching at the end of May. The series has been sweeping up awards for years, having the top “Indies” award in the 2017 pixiv and Nippon Shuppan Hanbai, Inc manga competition. A year later, they would take second place in that same competition’s “Web Manga General Election,” alongside a top 20 ranking in Kono Manga ga Sugoi’s female readers ranking list. The manga also won an award in the Web Manga category of Niconico’s third Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards.
