Man, if I could be like Uramichi-oniisan I would sign up to be a children’s television presenter in a heartbeat. But I can’t, so I won’t.
A brand new promotional video has been released ahead of the upcoming July 2021 launch of the Uramichi-oniisan anime adaptation, produced by Studio Blanc. In the minute-long video, we meet our main character, Uramichi, who is the gymnastics teacher on the children’s program Together with Mama… unfortunately Uramichi has problems hiding his adult emotions in front of the kids, which can lead to the mood of the room changing in a heartbeat, as you’ll see.

Originally a manga created by Gaku Kuze, the series has been serialized in the online manga magazine Comic POOL since May 2017. It’s up to five volumes as of May 2021. Meanwhile, the series is being released in English by Kodansha USA and is up to two volumes as of January 2021.
As mentioned, the anime adaptation will be produced by Studio Blanc with Nobuyoshi Nagayama sitting in the director’s chair, working off series composition created by Touko Machida and character designs by Mizuki Takahashi and Yusuke Shibata. If you’re wondering, the series was originally set to premiere in 2020 but was delayed due to the worldwide pandemic.
Anime comedy is one of the most subjective genres within the medium and it’s often impossible to judge if a series is going to be good or even funny based on the short promotional videos which are presented to audiences ahead of time. All we can do is read about the concept and give it the good old-fashioned three-episode test run to see if it makes us laugh. In this case, I’m willing to give this series the benefit of the doubt and give it a shot once it premieres this coming July.
While I’m not expecting Shakespeare with this series, I am at least hoping for a dark comedy that can make me laugh uncomfortably. Unfortunately, we can’t even make an accurate guess based on the studio’s previous work, since they are most famous for My Girlfriend is a Sho-Bitch and Ro-Kyu-Bu. Not exactly hallmarks of the genre, but at least we know the series will look halfway decent.
