It’s pretty amazing how much information you can cram into one promotional video if you try hard enough.
On Saturday, December 19th, a brand new 90-second promotional video was released for the upcoming second season of the horse girl racing and idol series (yes, I’m serious) Uma Musume. In the new video, a ton of new information was revealed, including a brand new cast and crew members (a new studio will produce the animation), and best of all… a premiere date!
The biggest change from season one is that P.A. Works will not be the primary producer of the animation, but rather it’ll be Studio KAI. Kei Oikawa will return as director, but Takumi Narita will fill the assistant director role. Utamaro will compose the background music.
In terms of the voice cast, most of the roles are remaining unchanged from season one except for the role of Narita Brian, who is being replaced by Rika Kinugawa (the role was previously filled by Yuka Aisaka who took a hiatus in 2018). The newly announced cast members include (character names first):
Twin Turbo: Miharu Hanai
Ikuno Dictus: Masumi Tazawa
Matikane Tannhauser: Hikaru Tohno
Kitasan Black: Hinaki Yano
Satono Diamond: Hina Tachibana
The series will premiere on January 4th in Japan while the mobile game (which has been delayed since 2018) will finally make its debut on February 24th, 2021. You can check out a promotional video for the game directly below.
Uma Musume is a series that has absolutely zero right to be as good as it is. Despite having a quite crazy premise, the horse girl racing and idol series became quite popular among fans, though with popularity comes unintended consequences. Being that every character in the series is named after a real-life racing horse, at one point the producers of the franchise had to plead with fans to not draw lewd images of the characters as it would damage the reputation of the real-life horses.
