A surprisingly fun series from the spring 2018 season was Uma Musume, a racing series about horse girls. While we’re still patiently waiting for the franchise to announce a second season of the main story, we can at least take solace in this promotional video for a spinoff series which will premiere this coming July. The new spinoff series is titled Umayon. We don’t know a lot about the series at this point but we do know that the animation will be produced by DMM.futureworks and W Toon Studio.
Uma Musume was scheduled to be a mixed media project that would start with a mobile game and include manga and anime. The game was originally announced in 2016 but soon afterward was delayed to an unknown future date. A manga series was launched on the Cygames website in March 2017 and has since been compiled into four volumes as of early 2019. A thirteen-episode anime series with animation from P.A. Works aired from April to June 2018 and was simulcast by Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll describes the story of Uma Musume as:
This is a tale of a world where “horse girls”; with glorious names and incredible running abilities live alongside humanity. Horse girl Special Week has moved from the country to the city to attend Tracen Academy. There, she and her classmates compete to win the Twinkle Series and earn the title of “The County’s #1 Horse Girl.”
If you missed this series when it first aired, I encourage anyone who enjoys sports series with a healthy dose of moe to go back and check this one out. Filled with many genuinely heartfelt moments and plenty of great comedy, this is a racing series that flew under way too many radars when it aired. I didn’t know that I had a thing for horse girls until I watched this series and I wouldn’t be shocked if you end up feeling the same way.
