I’m always grateful for isekai stories that attempt to do something a little different with the genre, and Dungeon of Black Company is certainly doing that by making our summoned main character an actual slave working in the mines. It’s starting on July 9th!
Originally a manga series created by Yohei Yasumura, the story for this series follows a man named Kinji who has never worked a day in his life but still manages to live a penthouse lifestyle thanks to smart real estate investments. Unfortunately for him, his life of luxury comes to an end when a portal transports him to a fantasy world. Was he transported in order to become a hero and save a beautiful member of the royal family from danger? Of course not! He was transported there to become a slave to a mining company and dig up crystals in a dungeon.
Serialized on the Mag Comi manga website since December 2016, Dungeon of Black Company is up to six volumes in both Japanese and English. Silver Link will produce the anime adaptation with Mirai Minato serving as the director, working off scripts written by Deko Akao.
Dungeon of Black Company will likely not be anyone’s pick for the series of the season, I think. While it looks like it could be funny enough to warrant a weekly watch, it’s probably for the best to keep your expectations for this series at a reasonable level. It could always prove to be an early season dark horse that manages to find a larger audience, but let’s not bet the house on that happening.
