A comedy needs to set up its dominoes quickly and knock them down in a catastrophic cascade of misfortune. How does the soul of a thigh-in-knee-socks-loving turnip farmer end up in the slowly decomposing body of the world’s hero? The Hero is Dead website introduces the story:
In a world of swords and magic, the devil, the enemy of humanity, lives and breathes.
One day, a farmer boy named Touka — a bit of a lecher — drops the hero Sion into a pitfall trap he has made and kills him!
To hide the fact, he buries the hero’s corpse. But in the morning, something happened to Touka’s body…!
A slightly naughty adventure fantasy of villagers and beautiful girls begins in the pitfall!
We need to pay attention to keywords in that brief summary. First, a Demon King needs to be defeated again. The seal that holds back the demon world has loosened, so minor devils have been ruining crops. Touka, a farm boy with a particular fetish, sets traps to stop those demons. When the hero travels through the farmlands to the demon gate, he dies in one of those traps. Who taught Touka how to make those pitfalls? Who put Touka inside the hero’s corpse? How did he develop his fetish for thicc thighs? These women did all of it!

LIDENFILMS is the studio adapting the manga into an anime. The original manga by Subaruichi, with the ridiculously long title that was also the premise, Yuusha ga Shinda! Murabito no Ore ga Hotta Otoshiana ni Yuusha ga Ochita Kekka. (The Hero is Dead! The Hero Fell into the Trap That a Villager Dug For the Village.), ran between December 9, 2014, to December 14, 2020, collected in twenty volumes. The sequel manga, Yuusha ga Shinda! Kami no Kuni-hen (The Hero is Dead! God’s Country Edition.) started on May 9, 2022. The anime director, Rion Kujou, has experience with the ecchi anime Shin Ikkitousen and Hagure Yuusha no Estetica, so I expect the fanservice to hit eleven on the dial. He will put this cast of characters through the wringer.
- Touka Scott. Voice Actor — Wataru Katou (Martis Jun Asari from Aoashi). The farmer and pitfall trap specialist loves thighs and daikon radishes.
- Anri Haysworth. Voice Actor — Ayana Taketatsu (Ami Asai from Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!). A former Hero Party member, the necromancer girl used forbidden magic to transfer Touka’s soul into Sion’s dead body.
- Yuna Eunice. Voice Actor — Hibiku Yamamura (Demia from Interspecies Reviewers). Touka’s childhood friend and the source of his thigh fixation.
- Sion Blandan. Voice Actor — Shunichi Toki (Glenn Litbeit from Monster Girl Doctor). He is the unfortunate hero who fell down a hole. Because Touka uses the dead hero’s vocal cords, Sion’s voice actor will do most of the talking.
- Marguerit Farom. Voice Actor — Yurika Kubo (Loki from DanMachi). Princess Marguerit wants to marry a brave man. Does it count if that man is already dead?
- Esel Borgnine. Voice Actor — Sayaka Oohara (Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail). The thief and bounty hunter taught Touka how to build traps. He calls her “Master.”
