After The Promised Neverland reached its climax a few months ago, various news outlets are suggesting that the manga series will end next week, with the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, after an info dump was released on social media. While this information came courtesy of an unofficial Weekly Shonen Jump Twitter account, the preview image for the magazine’s next issue, slated for June 8th, lets us know that a chapter of The Promised Neverland will be available.
While the unofficial source stated that the series would end with this upcoming chapter, there seems to be nothing to suggest that this chapter is, in fact, the final chapter. Instead, the preview for the chapter only builds suspense, relying on many double exclamations and at least one interrobang. It’s also hard to imagine Weekly Shonen Jump’s parent company Shueisha would let their latest darling end its run without some sort of fanfare. The series has broken several sales records since it’s debut in 2016. It’s also spawned a stage play, a live-action movie, an anime, and countless merch items.
For those following the manga, the chapter will surely be a welcome read, regardless of whether or not this chapter contains the end of the series. For any anime-only fans, it’ll be quite a while until Season 2 releases, as it’s been delayed due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This is also a good time for any newcomers to the series, as you’ll spend plenty of time puzzling over the series’ early mysteries before the inevitable wave of Internet spoilers comes rushing through. For anyone who was on the fence about the series, it’s summarized as follows:
Emma, Norman, and Ray are the brightest kids at the Grace Field House orphanage. Under the care of the woman they refer to as “Mom,” all the kids have enjoyed a comfortable life. Good food, clean clothes, and the perfect environment to learn — what more could an orphan ask for? One day, though, Emma and Norman uncover the dark truth of the outside world they are forbidden from seeing.
