There are three things that a passionate, patriotic American loves to see on the 4th of July: big fireworks, bigger burgers, and anime adaptations of Japanese light novels about handsome demon dudes going to school with busty Hell girls. That third bit almost wasn’t going to happen this year, as the anime version of Shu’s light novel series The Misfit of Demon King Academy: History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants (Maō Gakuin no Futekigōsha ~Shijō Saikyō no Maō no Shiso, Tensei Shite Shison-tachi no Gakkō e Kayō) was originally set to debut this April. The sudden effects of COVID-19 led to the production being delayed, though. Now, a new and incredibly patriotic date of July 4th has been set for the premiere of The Misfit of Demon King Academy.

The series will first broadcast on Tokyo MX, Tochigi TV, Gunma TV, BS11, and AT-X on July 4th at 11:30 p.m. before later airing on TV Aichi and Yomiuri TV on July 5th and July 6th, respectively. The Misfit of Demon King Academy is also set to stream online in Japan on dAnime Store starting July 4. Alongside news of the broadcast details for the anime, the announcement also shared details on the opening theme song for the show, a track by CIVILIAN titled “Seikai Fusaikai” (Correct Incorrect).
There are three main cast members confirmed so far for The Misfit of Demon King Academy. The first is Tatsuhisa Suzuki as series protagonist Anos Voldigoad. Anos is the current reincarnation of the legendary Tyrannical Demon Lord, an entity previously known for his calm and confident demeanor. When he’s reincarnated into modern times, though, his magical abilities are so arcane and unknowable that they cannot be measured, labeling him “unfit” in the eyes of the school.
Then, there are the Necron sisters. Tomori Kusunoki plays Misha Necron in The Misfit of Demon King Academy, a girl from the Aivis Necron bloodline who serves as one of the seven members of the Demonic Imperial Council. This council governs all of demonkind, but despite her membership in it, she is still treated by many as being a demon of low status. Her sister, Sasha Necron (played by Yuko Natsuyoshi), is the 16th in line to succeed the Necron throne. She has the extremely powerful Arcane Eyes of Annihilation, leading to her nickname “Witch of Annihilation.”
The anime is being produced at SILVER LINK, the studio previously responsible for series like BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense., My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, and Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya. Shin Oonuma, who previously worked on Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya and A Sister’s All You Need, is the chief director of The Misfit of Demon Academy, alongside main director Masafumi Tamura and assistant director Mirai Minato. Tamura previously worked on Two Car and Wise Man’s Grandchild, while Minato has also been a staff member on Masamune-kun’s Revenge and Miss caretaker of Sunohara-sou.
Character designs for The Misfit of Demon Academy are being handled by Chaos;Child artist Kazuyuki Yamayoshi, who is adapting the original designs by Yoshinori Shizuma for animation. Laid-Back Camp writer Jin Tanaka is in charge of series scripts, while Ryousuke Naya is the sound director and Keiji Inai is the composer for the series.
Originally launched back in April of 2017 by author Shu, The Misfit of Demon King Academy is published by Kadokawa in Japan, with illustrations by Yoshinori Shizuma. The series also inspired a manga adaptation by Kayaharuka that launched in July of 2018 on the Square Enix Manga Up! website. Square Enix currently publishes the manga adaptation in English under the title The Misfit of Demon King Academy: History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants, and describes the story as follows:
Despite their appetite for destruction, even demon kings tire of all the blood and chaos sometimes! When Anoth reincarnates in the hopes of a more peaceful life, he ends up going to school with his descendants in his old castle 2,000 years later. But with magic on its last legs in this era, no one is able to assess Anoth’s true power!
