Akihiro Ononaka’s titillating manga, Gushing Over Magical Girls, is getting its long-awaited English release. J-Novel Club announced it will add the Maho Ako English manga as one of eight upcoming series to its print roster. The publisher will release the first volume of the work in July 2025 and the following volumes monthly. Since the English version of the manga has only been available as an ePub, this is welcome news for fans of Magia Baiser’s hyper-sexual escapades.
Takeshobo’s Storia Dash website has serialized Gushing over Magical Girls since March 29, 2019. Manga Life Storia (Takeshobo) briefly serialized the mangabefore the publication’s end in July 2019. Maho Shoujo ni Akogarete has been on an indefinite hiatus since March 15, 2024, due to Ononaka-sensei’s health.
What’s the Maho Ako English Manga About?
Gushing over Magical Girls tells the story of Utena Hiiragi, a girl who easily fits into the background. Being on the meek and introverted side, Utena has little in life that excites her. The one thing she’s passionate about is magical girls. In particular, she obsesses unhealthily over her town’s resident magical trio, the Tres Magia. Not only does she amass a collection of Tres Magia merch, but she also daydreams about joining their ranks.
One day, that dream seems to find its way to her. When a magical mascot appears before Utena and offers her a chance to transform, it seems incredulous to the point of doubt. She jumped on the offer, knowing this opportunity would never grace her again. But after her transformation, she finds herself clad in a revealing S&M-styled outfit instead of being a newfound paradigm of justice. She tried to backtrack after immediately realizing the mascot had duped her. She felt like a weeb reading an Anime Senpai on No Game No Life Season 2. But she can’t, as Venalita blackmails her with the prospect of sharing her transformation on social media if she backs out.
Forced to fight, Utena, now christened Magia Baiser, begins her assault against her beloved Tres Magia. And that’s when she learned that who we wish we were usually differs from who we are. Quickly overpowering the Tres Magia, she realizes that subjugating magical girls feels exceptionally good. And so Utena spirals into sexual addiction and the world of villainy.
Maho Ako and Where to Watch It
Asahi Productions animated the 13-episode TV anime adaptation of the manga. The slightly uncensored show is available on Anime Onegai (LatAm Spanish Sub/Dub), Animation Digital Network (France), and HIDIVE. Though the announcement omitted a release date, a second season is currently in production.
