The Great Cleric (Seija Musou: Salaryman, Isekai de Ikinokoru Tame ni Ayumu Michi, or The Great Cleric: White-Collar Survival in Another World) is another entry in the popular and world-traversing isekai genre. A regular salary man draws the short straw when God loses a bet and misses out on a promotion he worked incredibly hard to get. Still, he gets magic and can hang out with pretty women in a magical world.
The series is set to premiere sometime in July 2023. Until then, we have a trailer to keep the hype going.
Yokohama Animation Laboratory and Cloud Hearts, the animation studios working on this adaptation, have set up an official Twitter page, and a home page, dedicated to The Great Cleric. Series information, and extras, such as a Key Visual, can be found there.
Class Change from Salaryman to Cleric
The Great Cleric starts in our world. An unnamed salaryman, a skilled and efficient office worker, works hard to complete his tasks, all to get a well-deserved promotion. Unbeknownst to him, Earth’s God of Destiny and Galdardia’s Chief God had a bet, which our God lost. He had to give up ten mundane and ordinary souls to Galdardia’s God. One of those souls was our poor salaryman, who took a bullet in the chest and died on the spot. His strong will to life appealed to the new God, and he was specially selected to be reborn in Galdardia. This new God promised to make his next life a bit more comfortable and showed him a video game character creation menu.
The salaryman took the name Luciel (voiced by Reiji Kawashima) and, after getting his bearings, decided to become a healer, thinking he would be somewhere safe, just healing people from injuries. His goal became to prosper in the new world and die of old age rather than murder.
The Great Cleric Origins
The Great Cleric began its healing duties as a novel series written by Broccoli Lion. No, that’s not a typo or mistranslation. That’s the only name I can find for this person. Vegetable Cat posted his series to the user-generated website Shosetsuka ni Naro from October 17th, 2015, to February 28th, 2022.
Micro Magazine obtained publishing rights, tasked the artist Slime (these names), and adapted the series to the light novel format. It started its new publishing run in the GC Novels imprint on August 30th, 2016, and has released ten volumes since then.
Kodansha stepped in and assigned Hiiro Akikaze (a normal name this time!) to provide art for a manga adaptation. It began to publish this adaptation on June 1st, 2017, in its Suiyobi no Sirius magazine, where it has released eleven volumes thus far.
If you happen to be looking for more isekai goodness, the J-List shop has you covered. Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- has plenty of girls, but none better than a magical girl Rem. The Another World Rem 1/7 Figure is available at a discounted pre-order.
