For those new to the world of dukes with lethal touches, The Duke of Death and His Maid (Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Meido) features a story with a tragic beginning. The titular Duke Viktor was cursed to have a killing touch: anything he touches will instantly die. This curse was placed upon him as a child, and despite his young age, his mother banished him in fear. He was disowned and left to live in a manor far from his family, with only his butler Rob and his childhood friend and maid Alice Lendrott as company.
Though Viktor is mindful of his curse, Alice seems more keen to seduce him, which flusters the duke to no end. A burgeoning romance forms between them, despite the danger that is presented to Alice. This only provides one more reason for Viktor and his friends to find a way to remove the curse once and for all.
The Duke of Death and His Maid began its star-crossed love story as a manga series created by Koharu Inoue. The series ran from October 3rd, 2017 to May 17th, 2022 for a total of seventeen volumes, and it is never cool to ruin the story for newcomers, so manga readers should keep spoilers to a minimum.
J.C. Staff took up the task of adapting The Duke of Death and His Maid to anime form. Season 1 premiered on July 4th, 2021, and ran for twelve episodes. J.C. Staff returned for season 2, which fans can watch in the West on Crunchyroll’s streaming services.
