I suspect this news is going to get a mixed reaction, but it seems that the adventures of Sadou Maou, Emi Yusa, and the rest of the The Devil Is A Part-Timer crew are going to continue for another season in 2023.
In an announcement that hit the internet on the same day that the final episode of season two aired, the official website revealed that the reverse isekai series will get another sequel along with a brand new key visual. Unfortunately, no further details were revealed about the upcoming third season, such as if the season two crew would return to reprise their roles or when exactly in 2023 the series will be returning.
There was a real air of excitement from those who remembered the first season of The Devil Is A Part-Timer fondly when season two was announced. That was no real shock seeing as how fans had to wait nine years for a second season that many (including myself) had completely given up hope on. Premiering in the summer of 2022, the new season immediately turned the main story on its head by introducing an infant character that the main characters Sadou Maou and Emi Yusa had to raise together.
While I can’t speak for everyone who saw this, I know that there was a certain segment of the audience who were turned off by this plot development and just wanted more fun slice of life/fish out of water entertainment from this series. In my opinion, however, the second season needed to go in the direction it did in order to further develop the characters and the world that they originally came from.
While I was disappointed that the second season wasn’t nearly as funny as the original, I enjoyed seeing the main characters in new situations and seeing them grow as individuals as new challenges sought them out. I openly admit that the first season was fun and will always hold a special place in my heart, but the second season is still good, albeit in a different way. I might be in the minority here, but I’m already looking forward to seeing where the plot goes in the third season. With any luck, the next season will blend the best of both seasons available so far to get us closer to the story’s grand finale.
