The Detective is Already Dead is set to premiere on July 4th, with an hour-long first episode. To get us extra excited about this series that so many are already looking forward to, a brand new promotional video was posted to YouTube on Friday, June 4th.
Originally a light novel series, The Detective is Already Dead is written by Nigojū and illustrated by Umibōzu. The series is up to four volumes in Japan as of November 2020. Yen Press will release the first volume in English on June 22nd, 2021. The manga adaptation of the series has been running in Monthly Comic Alive magazine since May 2020 and has one volume published in Japan. In 2019, the light novel series won the 15th MF Bunko J newcomer award.
The anime adaptation was first revealed in January 2021 and will be animated by studio ENGI. Manabu Kurihara will direct, working off scripts written by Deko Akao and character designs provided by Yosuke Ito.
The main character in this series is a young man named Kimizuka Kimihiko who seems to always be in the center of some kind of crisis or emergency. That’s how he meets the super detective named Siesta and becomes her assistant for the next three years; helping her solve crimes, take down criminal organizations, and stopping other serious incidents from taking place. Unfortunately, that life comes to an end when Siesta passes away.
Deciding to go back to high school and live a “normal” life, Kimizuka keeps to himself for a year and enjoys his quiet life… that is until a girl who looks an awful lot like his former partner appears in his life.
With so many series airing during the summer, it can be hard to stand out and become one of the most anticipated series of the season and, I’ll be honest, I had never heard of this series before they announced the anime adaptation. Apparently, The Detective is Already Dead has more than a little positive buzz behind it so I guess I’ll be checking this one out once it premieres on July 4th.
