Sunrise released a surprise announcement about a new entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (Kido Senshi Gandamu: Tekketsu no Orufenzu) series. Urdr-Hunt is a mobile game first released on the Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans G app. This mobile game was developed as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the Gundam franchise. The app and game will shut down on January 11th, 2024. However, they leave behind a short anime series and a movie. We don’t have a release date yet, but we have a trailer. It’s freely available to watch on Twitter, but the YouTube video is region-blocked.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans is the fourteenth entry in the long-running Mobile Suit Gundam series. It is directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai and written by Mari Okada. The series ran from October 4th, 2015, to April 2nd, 2017. Urdr-Hunt was released on November 15th, 2022, when Hajime Kamoshida took over writing duties.

Urdr-Hunt‘s lead Gundam pilot and a couple of friends are as follows.

  • Wistario Afam — Rina Ikoma (Finis in Kamen Rider Reiwa: The First Generation). He is a young man born and raised in the Radonitsa Colony. He was orphaned young and inherited the colony management company Afam Equipment.
  • Korunaru Kousa — Reina Ueda (Sonia in Spy x Family). A stoic guide to the Urdr-Hunt who mysteriously appeared before Wistario.
  • Demner Kitaco Jr. — Kenyu Horiuchi (Wilhelm van Astrea in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-) Demner serves as both teacher and caretaker for Wistario. He’s a strict man but will inevitably dote on his ward.

Sunrise has maintained a home page and Twitter page to promote Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Urdr-Hunt. Fans can find additional series information and Key Visuals there.

Sunrise Continues the Gundam Saga

Though it’s called Bandai Namco Filmworks nowadays, it’ll always be Sunrise to us. The fluid animation and action sequences are called “Sunrise Smooth” for a reason. This is one of those studios that need no introduction, but they deserve one anyway. Sunrise was founded in 1972 by former members of Mushi Production. They took to animating mecha anime because it was niche and could make toys.

Sunrise is responsible for some of the most legendary anime series to ever grace this planet. Besides the Gundam series, they have animated Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, Outlaw Star, Crest of the Stars, The Vision of Escaflowne, Love Live!, Dirty Pair, Inuyasha, and many more.

On the Hunt

Urdr-Hunt is set between Seasons 1 and 2 of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans with original characters. The title is taken from the Norse myth of the Nornir, specifically Urdr. This Nornir sister represents the past. For context, Verdandi represents the present, and Skuld oversees the future. The Nornir make their home at the well Urdarbrunnr beneath the world ash tree Yggdrasill of Asgardr. Whether or not Urdr-Hunt is going to mess with fate is anyone’s guess. Iron-Blooded Orphans used Norse terms, so this might be more of that.

Urdr-Hunt’s chief Gundam pilot is Wistario Afam, an orphan and heir to the colony management company Afam Equipment. He was born and raised at the Radonitsa Colony near Venus. He heard of the Tekkadan team’s various exploits even in his remote colony. Venus was abandoned as a terraforming project sometime after Mars was made habitable. As such, Venus and its colonies were taken over by Gjallarhorn.

Radonitsa was turned into a penal colony, wherein its lower levels were made to hold criminals. The upper levels have a Venetian design, but even that is crumbling due to a low population and no real economy worth mentioning. Wistario hopes to change his home for the better and revitalize it. This is when he’s approached by Korunaru Kousa and informed of the Urdr-Hunt.

Are you excited to return to the world of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans? Have you seen the anime, or do you plan to marathon it? Who is your Best Girl in the series? Let us know in the comments below.
