Holy bananas, Kurisu! The time travel franchise Steins;Gate is getting a live-action Hollywood television adaptation. Did not see that one coming.
At the Science ADV Live S;G 1010th ANNIVERSARY event in Odaiba, Tokyo, held on January 26th, it was revealed that the hit visual novel is going to be made into a live-action television drama by the studio that created the Netflix series Altered Carbon, as well as top movies such as Terminator: Dark Fate and Top Gun: Maverick, at some point in the future. No word on when this series will hit airwaves but it is being slated for worldwide distribution.
Steins;Gate started as a visual novel released on the XBox360 in 2009, before being ported over to PC the following year. Since that time it has seen numerous re-releases, spinoffs, and sequels. The main game is available in English in both physical and download editions from JBOX, who describes the story as:
Okabe Rintaro is an eccentric college student who dreams of conspiracy and chaos. Adopting the persona of a mad scientist, he spends his time developing oddball gadgets with his friends in their makeshift laboratory.
Everything changes when they accidentally build a functional time machine. Now they must evade the menace of a worldwide conspiracy while dealing with the consequences of their changes to the timeline.
What will Okabe choose when he holds the future in his hands?
In 2011, studio White Fox adapted the game into a 24 episode television series which still rates as one of the best sci-fi series in anime history with many fans. In 2013, a movie sequel was released titled Steins;Gate Movie: Load Region of Deja Vu. This was eventually followed by an alternate worldview re-telling of the story, titled Steins;Gate 0, in spring 2018. This isn’t even counting the many OVAs, manga, and light novel spinoffs that have been released over the years as well!
