Bet you forgot that we’re still celebrating the 20th anniversary of the series, Sister Princess, didn’t you?
About a year ago, Sister Princess came back in a big way by having characters appear on YouTube, but that’s not good enough for the creators of this franchise, not by a long shot. So what would be the proper way to celebrate the sisters? Turn them into idols and give them their own virtual concert, naturally.
Last week, a crowdfunding campaign launched on the site Camp-Fire to raise funds for a virtual concert starring the girls from Sister Princess… and it met its initial goal of 20 million yen within seven hours, at which point it added two stretch goals.
At 35 million yen, the staff will release a model of Karen in a swimsuit, along with a special event to premiere the swimsuit that will include a mini-concert. At 40 million yen, a special ten-song album featuring solo songs by the sisters will be released. In case you’re wondering, the campaign has raised over 32 million yen (a little over $300,000 USD) from almost 700 campaign backers as of this writing and it still has eight days to go.
Sister Princess was originally launched as a serialized light novel written by Sakurako Kimino in Dengeki G’s magazine from 1999 to 2003. In 2001, the series was adapted into a manga and the first of two television anime series (the first of which was released in English by ADV Films) were aired. In 2018, the anime series and its sequel (which was never officially released in English) were rescued by Discotek Media and re-released in the west.
Discotek Media describes the plot of the first season as:
Wataru Minakami was at the top of his class in middle school and had a pretty comfy life in Tokyo. But, when he unexpectedly fails his only high school entrance exam because of a computer glitch, his life is suddenly thrown into utter chaos! Jeeves, Wataru’s trusted butler, sends him off to attend school on a mysterious island. Upon his arrival, Wataru encounters many friendly, cute girls. This isn’t a problem until he finds out they are all his sisters! For most kids, adjusting to life at a new school in a different town is tough enough. But for Wataru Minakami, high school will be the easy part!
