It’s been some time since we last discussed the My Next Life as a Villainess movie adaptation. In that time, Silver Link has released a couple of character trailers. One trailer features Catarina herself, and another stars her friend Mary Hunt. The new character trailer also provides a trailer for the movie, which is a nice bonus. We’ve waited this long, and the December 8, 2023 premiere date is close.
Satoru Yamaguchi first released his My Next Life as a Villainess novel on July 6, 2014. Ichijinsha picked up the rights and hired the artist Nami Hidaka to adapt the series to the light novel format. Thirteen volumes have been released since, in the Ichijinsha Bunko Iris imprint.
Our Bakarina and two of her friends are as follows:
- Catarina Claes — Maaya Uchida (Kaguya Yamai in Date A Live). The protagonist of My Next Life as a Villainess. A 17-year-old high school student and otaku who has been reincarnated as the villainess character of the game Fortune Lover. She now works to avoid her various game-over scenarios.
- Mary Hunt — Miho Okasaki (Rimuru Tempest in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime). Though she was a rival character in the original game, Mary and Catarina have become friends. Catarina accidentally stole one of the key scenes from the game, leading Mary to form romantic feelings for her.
- Sophia Ascart — Inori Minase (Itsuki Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets). Sophia was considered cursed due to her silver hair and red eyes. She opened up when Catarina bonded with her over their shared love of romance books. She is another romantic rival for Catarina’s heart.
Silver Link has maintained a promotional home page and a Twitter/X page to keep fans of My Next Life as a Villainess up to date. The home page even has new key visuals.
Reborn to Game the System
My Next Life as a Villainess follows an unassuming isekai protagonist. She was reborn in the world of one of her favorite otome games, Fortune Lover. In an unfortunate turn of events for this lover, she took on the role of Catarina Claes, the game’s antagonist. Catarina regained her memories of her previous life at a young age, so her plans to avoid death or exile were formed early on. Her plans to train her Earth-based power went nowhere, but she became good at gardening. Catarina also planned to get on the protagonists’ good side so they would ideally exile her, but she was too good at that.
Our otaku-turned-otome-villainess won over her counterpart’s victims and executioners easily. Her kindness, generosity, and cleverness won her a fiancé in Prince Geordo. That didn’t stop the other men — and women — from pining after her. If she wasn’t so oblivious, she’d know she’s one step away from the coveted title of an actual isekai harem protagonist. These friendships will help her avoid the original Catarina’s eventual downfall in her numerous game-over scenarios.
Silver Link Continues to Isekai Girls into Princesses
Hayato Kaneko, a former Frontline animation producer, founded Silver Link in December 2007. Shin Oonuma, Akiyuki Shinbo, and Tatsuya Oishi, former Shaft creators, joined him shortly afterward.
My Next Life as a Villainess isn’t its first foray into reincarnated princesses. Tearmoon Empire was also one of its works. Although that’s not an isekai series, it is a princess trying to avoid an untimely demise, so it’s still similar. Ragna Crimson also has a time travel and second chance theme, but its tone is far darker. Now for something completely different: Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! has cute girls from Hokkaido.
