A new, original anime series is set to make riding the train cool again. Shumatsu Train Doko e Iku? (Where Is the Terminal Train Going?) sees a clever girl riding a train to find her friends. It’s a miracle the rails are in such good shape after an unknown phenomenon makes such travel unsafe.
We’ll learn how things go when the series premieres sometime in 2024. Until then, we can enjoy the trailer.
Studio EMT Squared has established a promotional home page for Shumatsu Train Doko e Iku? and an official Twitter page. Behind-the-scenes information, and bonuses, such as the key visuals, can be found on those sites.
Ride the Rails, Find Your Friends
We don’t have many specific plot details about Shumatsu Train Doko e Iku?, but we have enough to figure out what to expect. An unknown phenomenon has upended a suburban town, making things quite dangerous for those left behind. Shizuru Chikura (voiced by Chika Anzai) decides not to let that stop her, so she sets out to find her friends. Shizuru isn’t helpless, either. A natural leader gifted with jiu-jitsu skills, she will surely accomplish her goals.
Nadeshiko Hoshi (voiced by Azumi Waki) is the group mediator. She’s a kind-hearted girl who offers advice where needed. Nadeshiko also takes up archery and becomes quite proficient. Reimi Kuga (voiced by Erisa Kuon) is the tomboy of the group. She works mainly on instinct and emotions. Reimi’s five senses are sharper than the others. Last, we have Akira Shinonome (voiced by Hina Kino). She’s the brains of the group. Though Akira tries to act like an adult, she’s quick to quarrel with Reimi.
The group of friends locates a train that hasn’t seen service in a while. Even so, it’s operational, and the girls start riding it to the very end of the line. It could be dangerous, they may not make it back alive, but it’s an adventure worth taking on a mysterious train. I hope one of them is an engineer. Maybe Akira read a book or two about train maintenance.
