Did someone load the wrong anime preview trailer? Shangri-La Frontier (シャングリラ・フロンティア) Season 3 premieres January 10, 2027, for two consecutive cours. Yet its opening arc hands the screen to Galaxia Heroes: Chaos and goes all in on esports drama. Sunraku’s fantasy adventure suddenly looks like a completely different anime wearing the correct title card.

Shangri-La Frontier Resumes at Match Start
Rakurou Hizutome seeks out broken games that sensible players abandon. Bad controls and miserable balance have trained him to spot what a game is doing wrong. Then he beats it anyway. After clearing another kusoge (shit game), he starts playing the acclaimed VR game Shangri-La Frontier to see what a game built properly can throw at him.
Season 2 stopped right before the pro gamer teams Star Rain and Nitro Squad began their exhibition match. Professional player Kei Uomi recruited Rakurou and Towa Amane as substitutes on his Nitro Squad for the Global Game Competition (GGC). They compete as NoFace and NoName. Shangri-La Frontier starts Season 3 at match time. Plug in. Hit play. No tutorial. The Ctarnidd storyline in that other game can wait while the tournament steals the show.
Returning Players Queue for a New Game
The returning cast splits neatly across Nitro Squad and Star Rain, while C2C keeps the production side familiar. Here is who is playing and who is running Shangri-La Frontier behind its screens. Future announcements will address additional cast members closer to the premiere.
Nitro Squad
- Yuuma Uchida — Rakurou Hizutome / Sunraku / NoFace
- Youko Hikasa — Towa Amane / Arthur Pencilgon / NoName
- Makoto Koichi — Kei Uomi / OiKatzo
- Yumi Uchiyama — Megumi Natsume / Nu2meg
Star Rain
- Minami Takahashi — Sylvia Goldberg
- Daiki Hamano — Lucas Garcia
Production Staff
- Chief director — Toshiyuki Kubooka
- Director — Hiro Ooki
- Series composition and scripts — Kazuyuki Fudeyasu
- Character design — Ayumi Kurashima
- Music — MONACA
- Original work — Katarina and Ryousuke Fuji
- Animation production — C2C
The teams can settle their grudges in the bracket. The staff must merely keep Shangri-La Frontier from crashing before Rakurou can return to beat the game.
From Gaming Culture to a Galaxia Heroes Esports Anime
J-List has covered Shangri-La Frontier through a gaming-culture lens because Rakurou built his skills by defeating badly designed games. Bugs and miserable balance taught him to read hostile systems fast. The GGC drops him into Galaxia Heroes: Chaos, a VR fighting game built on the SLF engine.
The recently released Fall 2026 anime Dark Machine: The Animation made esports its whole deal. This Shangri-La Frontier arc steals its headset for a while. Matchup graphics and pre-match interviews make the takeover convincing. The anime still runs on Rakurou finding a way through games that fight dirty. This time, the broken systems are the pro gamers themselves.
When and Where Shangri-La Frontier Returns
Season 3 premieres on January 10 for two consecutive cours in Japan. Crunchyroll will stream Shangri-La Frontier to international audiences.
Wrong Game, Right Player: Shangri-La Frontier Season 3 changes games without fumbling the controller. The GGC gives Sunraku a professional competitive arena to let loose his hard-earned kusoge survival skills.
