Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement (Rogo ni Sonaete Isekai de 8-Man-Mai no Kinka o Tamemasu) continues the trend in isekai series that use an incredibly long title that doubles as a proper summary, so for the sake of sanity, we’ll use a shortened title for this article. Now then, Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World takes on a more realistic approach to the isekai genre: the protagonist isn’t interested in harems or slaying demons, she’s just interested in her economic future.
While the series has already premiered on January 8th, 2023, Felix Film saw fit to hype up the latter half of the season, especially with a well-timed bikini shot from behind.
For those who missed them the first time around, Felix Film have set up an official Twitter account and a home page to keep their viewers up to date on the Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World, and to show off interesting art, like manga covers and key visual arts such as the one below.
An Economic Isekai
While numerous isekai series show protagonists with cheat abilities taking down whole armies and winning romance, Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World takes a different approach. Both the protagonist’s abilities and goals are different. While Touya Mochizuki of In Another World With My Smartphone, a guy with the power of a god settled diplomatic issues, fought powerful enemies, and wed his harem of lovely ladies, Mitsuha Yamano, the isekai protagonist of Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World, just wants to earn enough money to retire.
Mitsuha Yamano lost both of her parents and her older brother (who was a cool otaku, making it all the more tragic) in an accident, and with her greedy relatives keen to take control of her inheritance, Mitsuha decided to become self-reliant and plan for the future. While thinking about her options in life at a cliffside view, three guys attempt to aggressively hit on her. Seeing that they will not take “no” for an answer, Mitsuha kicks the leader where it really hurts. In revenge, another guy shoves her, which breaks the wooden fence and causes Mitsuha to tumble off the cliff.
This is where her journey begins and she finds herself in another world. She then puts her new power to use and buy items from Japan on the cheap to sell them in the other world for a markup in gold. It’s not simply a shop simulator though. Mitsuha goes on her own adventures and recalls her otaku brother’s guidance for various situations, such as when she borrowed his gear to fight off wolves.
