You don’t become one of the best of all time by slacking off, as proven by Rumiko Takahashi.
Recently famed and beloved manga author Rumiko Takahashi joined Twitter. And there was much rejoicing. Part of her joining the social media platform was to answer questions from fans submitted to a special website, with her answers scheduled to start arriving on July 1st.
Leading up to these answers, her editor has decided to share responses from a Q&A conducted a year ago with Takahashi. Each day at 7 p.m. Japan Standard Time, one answer will be posted. The first question involved her daily schedule during production times, and let me tell you, this is one hard-working individual!
During production time
In the morning – Pencil in 7 to 8 character sheets
12 p.m. – Lunch and Housework
4 p.m. – Reading and Housework
7 p.m. – Dinner and Housework
9 p.m. – Drawing
The next day
9 a.m. – Finish drawing, go to bed
12 p.m. – Lunch and Housework
4 p.m. – Drawing
7 p.m. – Break and Dinner
8 p.m. – Resume Drawing
The next day
9 a.m – Finish work
So if this schedule is the actual deal (and there’s really no reason to believe that it’s not), Takahashi works over a period of three days and sleeps for a grand total of three hours during that time. If you could see me right now, you’d see that my jaw is on the floor. This is on the same level as another famed author you may have heard of, Eiichiro Oda, who has a similarly insane work schedule.
I remember a decade ago I was able to put in much longer hours than I currently am able, but even at my peak, I never put in stretches like this! And let’s keep in mind that she’s been doing this for years, decades even! That’s some deep commitment to her craft and I can only applaud her for doing something that she loves that much that she’s willing to give up that much sleep.
