Netflix has finally released a trailer for Season 2 of Aggretsuko.
Following the character’s creation by Sanrio in 2015 and the subsequent shorts that followed from 2016-2018, this Netflix series follows Retsuko, an anthropomorphic red panda navigating the pitfalls of young adulthood including a stressful job and an overbearing boss, making friends as an adult, and staying true to yourself while in a romantic relationship. Oh, and unwinding from life’s stresses by singing death metal karaoke complete with stage makeup to rival KISS.
When we last left Retsuko in Season 1, despite her quest to leave her job by any means necessary, she had stuck it out with the help of her coworkers Fenneko and Haida, made new friends with Director Gori and Washimi, and had a spectacular dressing down by her overbearing boss, Director Ton, during an office party.
And while that might have lead to a one-way ticket to the unemployment line for anyone else, most of Retsuko’s coworkers dismiss the moment as a result of being drunk, and even Director Ton manages to eat a slice of humble pie and admit his shortcomings as a boss, if only for a moment.
But what’s in store for Retsuko this season? Why, marriage! That is if Retsuko’s mother has anything to say about it, and boy does she have a lot to say!
Perhaps disheartened by the fact that her daughter might be turning into a Christmas cake woman, it looks like Retsuko’s mom has decided to use the practice of miai (見合い), a formal marriage interview, to find her daughter a suitable husband, whether she wants one or not. And even though we saw Retsuko contemplating marriage as a way to leave her job last season, her mother’s meddling ways go unappreciated this time around.
Toss in a troublesome new coworker and the fact that Retsuko’s coworker Haida still has feelings for her, and it looks like our favorite mild-mannered, death metal loving red panda will have plenty to rage about this season. Watch the trailer below and check out Season 2 of Aggretsuko when it releases on June 14th.
