Sound the alarms, everyone! It’s NEW ANIME ANNOUNCEMENT DAY!
In a new announcement, it was revealed on Friday, December 4th, that a new anime will be part of a 2021 mixed media package that will also include video games. The title of the project is PuraOre! ~ PRIDE OF ORANGE ~ and will feature women’s ice hockey as its central theme. Unfortunately, there are very few further details besides a single cast member — Mayu Sagara — and the animation studio, which will be CA Animation. New cast members will be announced regularly on the official Twitter account leading up to a special presentation on December 11th, which will reveal much more information.
Now, before you scoff at the idea of moe girls playing ice hockey, let’s keep in mind that professional women’s ice hockey has existed since late last century when it was added to the 1998 winter Olympics. Though it has faced turbulent times over the last couple of decades, the sport still continues to be played and in 2022 the women’s hockey division will feature ten teams!
Sports anime with moe girls is a winning formula right now, with shows like Iwakakeru leading the charge. It might be true that we just can’t get enough of active kawaii girls doing their thing in the sports arena.
Not only that, but while doing research for this article, I learned that there is a professional women’s hockey league in North America which was founded in 2015 with four teams. Since its inception, however, it has expanded to six teams from both the United States and Canada.
Still, think the idea of women’s hockey is hokey and undeserving of an anime? Good, I’m glad we’re on the same page here. Be sure to stay tuned to the J-List blog for further details about the PuraOre series as they are released!
