Psycho-Pass Providence is an upcoming movie that not only continues the long-running Psycho-Pass series, but it also acts as a link between two very important and popular entries in the series. Not only does it bring the series protagonists Akane Tsunemori and Shinya Kogami back together, but they’re set against a conspiracy that threatens to bring the entire system to its knees.
This movie is set to premiere on May 12th, 2023. Until then, we have an action-packed trailer to enjoy.
Production I.G. continues its great work on the Psycho-Pass series. Many familiar face are returning, such as director Naoyoshi Shiotani. They have maintained a promotional home page, as well as an official Twitter page, to keep fans and viewers informed of series updates, such as new key visuals as seen below.
Peacebreakers & the Stronskaya Document
For those new to the Psycho-Pass series, here’s a quick summary of the world: a highly-advanced hive mind AI known as the Sibyl System constantly scans the minds of Japan’s populace and registers a Crime Coefficient number and color hue to each person to determine the probability that they become a criminal, and each person is given a Psycho-Pass with that identifier. As thorough as the system is, there are people known as Criminally Asymptomatic who can slip past it and commit terrible crimes.
The series begins in the year April 11th, 2112, and follows members of the Public Safety Bureau, the law enforcement department that tries to keep order. The main protagonists are Akane Tsunemori, who started off as a normal officer, and Shinya Kogami, who saw his partner die a gruesome death. That trauma caused his coefficient number to rise to the level of a criminal, so he was demoted to Enforcer, a criminal who supports the police.
Psycho-Pass Providence takes place in January 2118. During a meeting, the Chief Inspector of the Public Security Bureau, Akane Tsunemori, receives a report about an incident on a foreign ship. Dr. Milicia Stronskaya, who was invited to the meeting, was found dead. The act of violence was perpetrated by a terrorist organization known as the Peacebreakers, a group known for supplying weapons and soldiers to the highest bidders. The group targeted the late doctor’s research known as the Stronskaya Document.
An investigation is begun into the Behavioral Investigation Department, where they find Shinya Kogami.
Psycho-Pass Origins
Psycho-Pass is an original anime series that was produced by Production I.G. in 2012. It received critical acclaim and there have been numerous movies in addition to the beloved anime series. Psycho-Pass Providence, the latest movie in the series, tells an “untold story” and acts as a “missing link” that connects Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System Case 3: On the Other Side of Love and Hate and Psycho-Pass 3.
In addition to the TV anime and movies, the franchise also spawned multiple manga and light novel adaptations.
