Don’t let the cutesy aesthetic fool you; Talentless Nana is a shocking psychological thriller. Originally launched back in May of 2016 by author Looseboy and artist Iori Furuya in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine, the manga has garnered a cult following over the years thanks to its inventive story and well-developed characters. Now, just a couple months after Square Enix has published the sixth volume of the manga in Japan, it’s been revealed that an anime adaptation of the mind-bending adventure is set to arrive this October.
Alongside the announcement of the October premiere for the Talentless Nana anime, the official website for the series has shared a debut trailer for the series that shows off the main cast in action. Rumi Okubo plays protagonist and transfer student Nana Hiiragi. Hiro Shimono voices Nanao Nakajima, a boy with strong abilities and an even stronger sense of justice. Finally, Yuichi Nakamura voices Kyoya Onodera, a young man who transferred to the school the same day Nana did.
We’ve also got info on the opening and ending songs for Talentless Nana. Miyu Tomita is set to sing the opening song for the series, titled “Broken Sky.” Chiai Fukikawa, meanwhile, will be performing the ending song “Bakemono to Yobarete” (Known as a Monster).
As for the rest of the staff, the anime is being produced at animation studio Bridge, with Shinji Ishihira of Fairy Tail, Log Horizon, and Tokyo Majin fame directing it. Fumihiko Shimo, who previously wrote for Air, Kanon, and Clannad, is in charge of the series scripts. Character designs are being handled by Satohiko Sano, who previously worked on Heybot! and Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun. Yasuharu Takanashi of Team-MAX is composing the music for the series at Nippon Columbia.
Various other staff members on the Talentless Nana anime include Yuji Shibata as prop designer, Masaaki Kawaguchi as art director, Ken Kawai as art designer, Yukiko Ario as color key artist, Teruyuki Kawase as the compositing director of photography, Toshio Henmi as editor, Hiroto Morishita as sound director, and Noriko Izumo is in charge of handling sound effects.
Crunchyroll publishes the Talentless Nana manga in English, and describes the story as follows:
An academy on an island in unnavigable waters. There, students trained tirelessly, to fight back against the enemies of humanity. The protagonist, a student newly transferred there, also sets out with the intention of eradicating all enemies of humankind. An unpredictable, intellectual suspense story of justice and evil.
