I first heard about this project about a year ago, and I initially just filed it away in the ‘long-term storage’ area of my brain to reference at a later date. Well, today is that later date and now I’m very excited about this one!
In an announcement that hit the Internet on Friday, November 13th, it was revealed that the latest anime adaptation of a NISIOISIN novel series, Pretty Boy Detective Club (Bishōnen Tanteidan), will be making its debut in 2021. Not only that, but we can also now reveal that famed studio SHAFT will animate the series and have legendary anime director Akiyuki Simbo on as the supervising director.
Originally running in Japan from 2015 to 2019, the series was released in eleven volumes with a manga adaptation running for five volumes between 2016 and 2019. The English version of both the novel and manga series has been licensed by Vertical, with the first volume of the novel hitting shelves in September 2020 and the first two-in-one omnibus of the manga scheduled to hit shelves in summer 2021.
Vertical describes the story as:
Rules of the Pretty Boy Detective Club:
- Be pretty.
- Be a boy.
- Be a detective.
Mayumi Dojima, a second-year student at the exclusive Yubiwa Academy middle school, has lost something — a star she glimpsed just once, ten long years ago. But help is on the way, in the form of the unofficial, secretive, and thoroughly mysterious Pretty Boy Detective Club! Rumored to solve problems within the school (most of which they themselves may well have created) for reasons aesthetic rather than financial, these five gorgeous boys sweep Mayumi into their world of excitement, danger, and overwhelming beauty.
Any day that I get to reveal a new project for my favorite director, Akiyuki Simbo, is a good day for me, and I can guarantee that I’ll be tuning in for this series once it premieres next year!
