Of all the anime premiering next season, Gal to Kyoryu (The Gal and the Dinosaur) is perhaps the most intriguing and unique one of the bunch. First of all, it’s a series about a hip young gyaru hanging out with an adorable blue dinosaur. On top of that, the series isn’t just launching as an anime; a live-action television project is also premiering on the same day as the anime. Most interesting of all, though, is the talent behind the Gal to Kyoryu anime. A bevy of talent who worked on the chaotically bizarre Pop Team Epic anime are set to work on the Gal to Kyoryu anime, with studios Space Neko Company and Kamikaze Douga revealing poster visuals for the series alongside a brand new trailer for the live-action companion show.
Kamikaze Douga produced the first visual above, while Space Neko Company produced the second visual. The two studios are joined by another Pop Team Epic veteran on this project, as Jun Aoki is set to serve as the series script supervisor and series director. The anime is set to premiere on April 4th on Tokyo MX and BS 11, and the live-action version of the series will be premiering alongside the anime on the same day and channels. The recent trailer for the live-action version of Gal to Kyoryu revealed that live entertainer Nana Yashiro (known by the stage name 8467) will be playing the gyaru protagonist Kaide in the series. The trailer also gave us a preview of the opening theme song “Kyoryu Agemizawa” which, interestingly enough, is performed by the four main cast members from the anime as the singing unit “Kyoryu Friends.”
Those four anime cast members consist of Miyuri Shimabukuro as Kaede, Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaede’s friend Yamada, Youki Kudou as Kaede’s senior co-worker at her part-time job, and Seiichirō Yamashita as Kaede’s boyfriend, Shōta.
As for the rest of the anime staff, Toru Kanagae is set to be sound director, with Yasumasa Koyama in charge of sound effects and Glovision credited as the sound producer. Gin, who previously composed for Busted Rose, will be composing the music for the Gal to Kyoryu anime alongside music producers King Records. Kotaro Sudo and Shin Furukawa are the chief producers of the anime, alongside additional producers Riko Koarai and Akira Yonezawa. The live-action series, meanwhile, credits Kotaro Sudo as the series script supervisor and HALO as being in charge of production.
Gal to Kyoryu is based on the adorably simple and zany manga of the same name. The story begins with fashionable gyaru Kaede finding a cute blue dinosaur and deciding to make it her new roommate. Together, her and the dinosaur eat junk food, watch TV, and gossip about fashion. The manga was launched by married couple Mori and Tomimura in Kodansha’s Young Magazine in October 2018. The third compiled volume of the series was published by Kodansha last week.
Tomimura has created several other manga series that are known for their honest and inclusive LGBT content, such as the four-panel essay manga Bokutachi LGBT (We are LGBT) and Jitsuroku! Tō-san Densetsu (Reality! Dad’s Legend). Mori, meanwhile, is also responsible for the Sayonara, High School manga that currently runs on Akita Publishing’s Manga Cross website.
