Phantasy Star Online is one of the most popular online games in Asia right now, and so it’s no shocker that it is getting another anime adaptation. On August 19th, new details were revealed for the upcoming Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle TV series. Set to run for 25 episodes, the new series will premiere on October 7th on both Tokyo MX and BS11. The first anime adaptation aired in Winter 2016 and was simply titled Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation.
The new series will feature animation from studio Gonzo with Masaki Tachibana serving as director and Hiroshi Ohnogi handling series composition. As for the cast, virtually every character appearing in the series will be reprising their roles from the game aside from the lead character Ash, who will be played by veteran actor Daisuke Ono.
For the story, we know that this series will adapt the first three episodes of the game plus an original story. In the first episode of the game, the setting is the planet Nabarius and features the main character meeting a girl who has lost all of her memories. In episode two, the timeline has been shifted and the main character must unravel a conspiracy. Then, in episode three, the setting shifts again, leading to hidden truths being revealed.
As someone who doesn’t spend a lot of time in MMORPGs, even I have to admit that I’m intrigued by what I’ve discovered about this series. Studio Gonzo has a long and storied history with fantasy video game adaptations (Final Fantasy: Unlimited in 2001, Master of Epic in 2007, Tower of Druaga in 2008, Blade and Soul in 2014) so that fills me with hope for this title.
