Once again I say, this summer is going to be amazing!
P.A. Works announced on Friday, January 15th, that they will produce a brand new original series titled Aquatrope of White Sand. The series will premiere in July 2021. The series will reunite the director, writer, and character designer for IRODUKU: The World in Colors for the project. To celebrate this announcement, a 90-second promotional video was released along with a key visual (seen above), and a cast and crew reveal.
As previously mentioned, the animation will be produced by studio P.A. Works (Shirobako, Hanasaku Iroha) and feature Toshiya Shinohara as the director working off series composition penned by Yuuko Kakihara. Yuki Akiyama is providing character designs and Yoshiaki Dewa is composing the background music.
The primary cast members will be played by (character names first):
Kukuru Misakino: Miku Ito
Fuuka Miyazawa: Rikako Aida
Taking place at a small aquarium in Okinawa, the first main character is an aspiring idol named Fuuka who, after failing to pass her auditions, runs away from Tokyo to Okinawa. While visiting the Gama Gama Aquarium, she meets a girl who works at the aquarium named Kukuru, who knows the “secret” behind the aquarium. The story picks up after Fuuka gets a job at the aquarium and the pair have to learn how to deal with the trials and tribulations ahead of them, including the potential closure of the aquarium.
P.A. Works has a long history of “Cute Girls Getting Jobs” series, and this series doesn’t look like it’s going to stray too far from that formula. I’m willing and waiting to be impressed by this series as it looks like it’s going to throw some twists in the well-trod path that this studio has left behind, thus far.
