I admit that I’m not the biggest fan of sports anime. Still, even I couldn’t resist the absolutely amazing visuals and story that was presented in last year’s original anime from studio BONES, Sk8 the Infinity which is why I’m thrilled to report that the series will return at an unknown later time with a brand new OVA and second season!
The better news is that, as you might’ve seen in the promotional video above, they have also revealed that the upcoming OVA and second season will feature returning crew members director Hiroko Otsumi, series composition writer Ichiro Okouchi, and character designer Michinori Chiba.
It’s unfortunate that we don’t have even a vague time frame for when we will get to see these additions to the story, but I’m willing to be patient if it means more of the developing relationship between Reki and Langa!
Originally airing in January 2021, Sk8 the Infinity is an original, high-octane, extreme skateboarding series the likes of which you’ve never seen. Taking place in Okinawa, the series starts with a young man named Reki, who takes part in an extreme skateboarding competition known as “S”. One day, a mysterious transfer student from Canada named Langa arrives and after the two strike up a fast friendship, Langa finds himself pulled into the extreme skateboard racing scene. What makes this series special is that it’s so much more than just an extreme sports series. Rather, as you progress through the series and watch the relationship between Reki and Langa grow and flourish, you can’t help but feel attached to their development.
More than that though, this is also exciting because this bodes well for the trend of original stories that have become more prevalent over the last few years. Sk8 the Infinity came out of nowhere and, while it didn’t take over the world at the time of its release, the fact that it did well enough to get an OVA and sequel is quite pleasing.
