I’ve said this before on social media. Still, I am absolutely loving the new-ish trend of studios creating original anime stories, stories that aren’t adapting something that is already out there. While they aren’t always huge successes, it’s exciting that we’re coming back around to the idea that original stories can sometimes be worth the risk… which brings us to the subject of this article.
A brand new original rom-com titled Love Flops is headed our way this October and we have all the details you need to prepare yourself for wacky romantic shenanigans!
Alright, now that we’ve all watched the promotional video, let’s get to know these characters and who will bring them to life!
In this original story from studio Passione, the main character is a high school student named Asahi Kashiwagi. He, for some reason that has yet to be explained, is a person of interest to five transfer students to his high school from five different countries; Japan, United States, Bulgaria, China, and Germany.
The director for Love Flops will be Nobuyoshi Nagayama who will work off scripts written by Ryo Yasumoto and character designs provided by Kazuyuki Ueda. Meanwhile, the background music will be composed by Kenichiro Suehiro.
The cast for this series is a colorful yet talented bunch (character names first):
Asahi Kashiwagi: Ryota Ohsaka
Aoi Izumisawa: Miku Ito
Amelia Irving: Ayana Taketatsu
Ilya Illyukhin: Rie Takahashi
Bai Mongfa: Hisako Kanemoto
Karin Istel: Marika Kono
Yoshio Iijuin: Jun Fukuyama
Loverin: Shiori Izawa
The fear that I have for this series can be boiled down to just a few words: good concept, bad timing. Love Flops will premiere in an already stacked fall 2022 season. It will attempt to ply its unproven romantic comedy styling against series that includes part 2 of Spy x Family, the Urusei Yatsura remake, and season 2 of Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out. That’s not even broaching the returning shonen heavyweights of My Hero Academia Season 6, Mob Psycho 100 Season 3, and Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War!
Love Flops is already facing an uphill battle, but I’m willing to file this series in my mental database to check out in October.
