What’s the most bored you’ve ever been? I bet it wasn’t “make a nearly two-minute-long One Punch Man anime short” bored!
I’ve written before about how busy manga artists can be (I think we all remember Rumiko Takahashi’s insane work schedule). So when it was announced that the manga adaptation of One Punch Man authored by Yusuke Murata (ONE is credited as the original creator) would take a short break, I think most of us figured Murata would use that time to rest and recuperate. We were wrong.
Instead of using the time to catch up on things like sleep, Murata went the complete opposite direction and used his free time to draw his very own One Punch Man anime short that he posted to Twitter. And y’all? You’re going to want to watch this, especially if you’re a fan of the series.
Despite there being some Japanese in the soundless short, the story is pretty easy to follow. Saitama defeats yet another villain easily, but thanks to a stray leaflet, he spies something that is truly worth him using his superpowers: discounted meat at the grocery store! So off he races to the store only to be distracted by having to help an elderly person cross the street, then dive between two trains! Does he make it in time? You’ll have to watch the short to find out!

I’m not even a fan of One Punch Man (I’m not saying I hate it, I’ve just never watched it), but this short really impressed me! What impresses me even more is Murata saying that this will not be the only animated short he wants to produce. He went on to say that he wants to learn more about the animation process so that he can add sound effects and voices to the next one of these he does.
When exactly he’ll be producing another short is anyone’s guess. I assume he’ll be going back to his regular manga work in the near future, but as soon as he gets bored enough to produce another one of these, I’ll be ready!
