Nyaight of the Living Cat Promises Death to Allergy Sufferers and Boredom

Move aside, waifus! The cats are taking over! And I don’t mean cat girls. Nyaight of the Living Cat will come and shed all over Crunchyroll in July this year. Besides threatening to scratch up the couch, it promises a fresh take on the foot-dragging zombie apocalypse trope. Step aside, smelly zombies! We get cute cats instead!

Please, Sir! More Cat Anime!

Long before Discord and social media, we shared adorable cat pictures and memes via email. And how about those Bastet statues in ancient Egypt? I’m sure it was the feline murderers who masterminded the best PR campaign ever, and it’s ongoing. So, it’s no surprise that anime is tapping into the purrfect attention-grabbing potential of kawaii kitties, too.

Of course, Nyaight of the Living Cat isn’t the first (or last) anime featuring cats. Nyan Koi! already gave us humans who turned into cats. And Ramen Akeneko gave us cats cooking and serving ramen as if they were human.

I guess it’s obvious. Fans love cats!

Nyaight of the Living Cat Brings Terrifying Trailers of Tabby Terrors

Can you resist the urge to give cute kitties tummy rubs? You had better resist or face the ultimate horror: turning into a flea magnet yourself. That’s the premise of Nyaight of the Living Cat, where a transmutative virus turns cat-petting humans into Felis catus. Cat allergies suddenly became a superpower!

Nyaight of the Living Cat Goes from Manga to Screen

The first teaser showed panels from the successful shounen manga. The manga was by Hawkman, illustrated by Mecha-roots, and serialized by Comic Garden. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the English translation. There are six volumes (frustratingly, my local bookstore has run out of copies).

Crunchyroll to Host Nyaight of the Living Cat

Crunchyroll released an official trailer previewing Nyaight of the Living Cat three months ago. I’m always wary of trailers that show too much or raise false expectations. Hopefully, in this case, the 30 seconds we see in the trailer isn’t enough to mislead us.

PV 2 Has the Deets for Nyaight of the Living Cat

Cat puns? Check. Cat gags? Check! Nods to great horror movies (did you spot any?) and an interesting cast of characters? Yes, to all the above! Studio OLM Team Masuda appears to have put in the effort to make Nyaight of the Living Cat a memorable, fun show.

Production Staff for Nyaight of the Living Cat

Takashi Miike and Tomohiro Kamitani are in the directors’ chairs at OLM Team Masuda for this production. Shingo Irie writes the anime, with Kōji Endō overseeing the music. Most notably, the anime’s theme song, “Nyaight of the Living Cat,” which Endō performs, features Marty Friedman of Megadeath fame and Heidi Shepherd (Butcher Babies). Hard. Rock!
